I spent the last couple years figuring out how to grow on Twitter. I grew one account to 10k in 12 months, and now I’ve grown another to 16k in 6 months and growing fast. I’m just now getting to the point where it’s autopilot, I can schedule posts, I know my audience. If I had to grow another account to 10k again, I’m quite sure I could do it. Here are some general principles I’ve found to work.
It’s Worth Doing
“clout is worth chasing” — librxrian
There are a lot of benefits to growing a big account. You get a pipeline of friends who come pre-selected to like your interests, you may get professional opportunities, and you get paid some automatic income. And these only increase with your scale, which means it only gets better. Because scale only really ever increases.
The exception: If you’re an edgy poster who strays close to the line of the permaban, it may not be worth doing at all. I’m in that bucket myself.
Leadership
People want to follow a leader. Leadership in this sense is about being on the bleeding edge of knowledge. You want others to follow in your footsteps, aping your style and your moves. Two powerful levers are intelligence and courage. You can’t do much about your intelligence, but you can raise your courage. Don’t be afraid to attack people. Don’t be afraid to take a bold stand for which you will earn criticism. The function of the leader on Twitter is to plant a flag that the troops can rally around, because Twitter is more like a war zone than a marketplace.
A good general principle: Be more hostile, troll more.
